A case involving the validity of a Jewish marriage in Roumania in 1872 of a man now a clergyman of the Church of England was heard in the Court of Appeal today before the Master of the Rolls and Lords Justices Warrington and Sargant.

It was the appeal of the Rev. Aaron Emmanuel Suffrin from the judgment of Lord Merrivale in the Divorce Division declaring that his marriage to the petitioner, Amy Dora Suffrin (otherwise Saner), was null and void.

Petitioner alleged that on April 19th, 1906, she was married to Mr. Suffrin at the Church of St. Martins-in-the-Fields, he having told her that he was a widower, and that his wife was dead.

She lived with Mr. Suffrin at the Vicarage, Waterlooville, Cosham, Hants, there being three children, who had been made wards of court in Chancery.

She alleged that on March 22, 1872, Mr. Suffrin, who was a Roumanian by birth, had lawfully married Sima Feigha Almasanu at the Town Hall, Piatra, and that at the time of her own marriage to Mr. Suffrin, Sima Feigha Almasanu was living, and that the marriage of 1872 was valid.

Mr. Suffrin admitted the marriage, but denied that the ceremony was performed in accordance with the laws of Roumania, as he was at that time a minor and under duress. He further alleged that the marriage was dissolved by the Rabbi in Bucharest in 1874.

Lord Merrivale, in granting the decree of nullity, held that the Roumanian marriage was valid. From this result Mr. Suffrin now appealed.

Mr. Suffrin in his evidence alleged that he was the victim of Jewish persecution. The Jewish marriage to Sima Feigha Almasanu in 1872 was forced upon him.

Mr. Suffrin stated that his Jewish marriage was dissolved by the Rabbi. The appeal was dismissed with costs.
