David Stein, the eight year old son of Peretz Stein who was shot by Ukrainians to prevent his testifying at the Schwartz-bard trial, was taken under the patronage of Madam Zadoc Cohn.

Madam Anna Schwartzbard, the wife of Petlura’s assassin, called on Peretz Stein at the hospital, where a tragic scene occurred when the two wept over their fate. An operation to extract the bullets from Stein’s body will take place tomorrow. Madam Schwartzbard promised to protect Stein’s boy.

Stein, who was able to speak today, related further details of his life. He lived in Rostov Don where, prior to the war, he was a prosperous owner of a tailoring shop. When the war broke out he enlisted in the army and later participated in the Jewish self-defense body in the Ukraine. He was taken prisoner by Petlura’s bands who tortured him. His body was burned with red hot irons. He had a miraculous escape from the Petlura band, due to the sudden bombardment of the city in which he was held. His life was saved but as a result of the torture he became an epileptic. When he returned home he found that his wife had been killed by the Denikin bands and his house wrecked. He then proceeded to Poland from where he attempted to emigrate to Argentine and Palestine, but he was rejected because of his health. He was deported to Marseilles. In Paris he was overwhelmed by Schwartzbard’s act and considered him a “messenger of God.”
