Exact data on the situation of the mountain Jews in Caucasia is given by the Yiddish Communist daily “Emes”

According to this report the number of Caucasian Jews totals 103,000. The majority of them are civil war refugees from the districts of North Caucasia and Dagestan. One hundred and fifty families are engaged in agriculture, cultivating an area of 339 desiatin. Seventy families are engaged in crafts. The rest are without definite occupation. Illiteracy is rampant among them.
