Gustav Zagmals leader of the democratic center in the Latvian parliament, was elected president of the Republic by the national assembly yesterday.

Zagmals received a majority thanks to the votes of the Jewish deputies. He is known to have a friendly attitude toward the Jewish population.

The election of Zagmals is considered here a triumph of the bloc of the democratic minorities which have checked the elections of all Chauvanistic candidates.
