The cooperative of Jewish colonists in the Rivera district in the Argentine has started a movement to raise funds for the purpose of purchasing an area of land for the settlement of the sons and sons-in-law of colonists.
An agreement has been concluded between the cooperative and the estate owner, La Rossa, by which an area of 8,680 hectares of land adjoining the Jewish colony Rivera will be purchased. A sum of 28,119 pesos has already been paid for the land and the balance of 130,000 pesos is to be paid up during April.
First place in the settlement work will be given to the sons and sons-in-law of colonists, but provision will also be made for the settlement of others on the land. Each colonist will hold between 100 and 200 hectares of land. Eighty per cent of the purchase price will remain over to be paid off by the settlers within a period of 33 years.
Miss Jessie E. Sampter, of Rehoboth, Palestine, was declared the winner of the Jewish National Fund English Song contest, her winning song, “The Four Winds”, having been found the best among the English songs submitted. The judges of the English songs who picked Miss Sampter for the $100 prize were Joseph Eron, Maurice Samuel and Dr. Elias Lieberman. Miss Sampter is the author of “The Emek”.
