The hunger strike declared by the Jewish student, Lespesianu, who is held in prison for shooting in self-defense, was debated yesterday in the parliament.

An interpellation to this effect was introduced by the Jewish deputy, Meyer Ebner, representative from Bukowina. Asking the government whether it knows why Lespesianu declared the hunger strike, he formulated a demand that the prisoner be released on bail. The Minister of Justice gave no reply to the question.

A public protest against the continued imprisonment of Lespesianu was made today by the Association of Jewish students at the University of Bucharest. In their protest the Jewish students declare that Lespesianu, who is merely a victim of the intolerable position of the Jewish students who are being constantly attacked at the Roumanian universities, should not be held in prison until his trial. The Association points out that the Roumanian students who attacked the Jewish students remain unpunished, while the single Jewish student who defended himself by shooting into the air is held in prison for many months.
