The second annual conference of the National Council of Jewish Education was opened Sunday evening at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
Ben Rosen, director, Associated Talmud Torah of Philadelphia, presided at the opening session. Dr. Leo L. Honor, president of the National Council for Jewish Education, submitted his address. A discussion on “What shall be the direction for Jewish educational activity during the following year?” took place, led by Dr. Samson Benderly, director, Bureau of Jewish Education.
A discussion of text books for beginners in Hebrew was held at the second session Dr. Nisson Turoff, professor, Jewish Institute of Religion, New York; Abraham Friedland. Director, Cleveland Hebrew School, Cleveland, Ohio; Zvi Scharfstein, Instructor, Teachers Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Mr. Kalman Whiteman, secretary, Hebrew Principals’ Association, New York, were the speakers.
Individual vs. group instruction was discussed by Dr. Alexander M. Dushkin, Director, Board of Jewish Education, Chicago, Ilinois. Jacob Golub, Supervisor of Schools, Board of Jewish Education, Chicago, Illinois, who read a paper on individual instruction and Samuel Dinin, executive director, Society for Advancement of Judaism, New York.
