Jewish Center Viewed As Unifying Factor

Rabbi William H. Fineshriber, of Philadelphia, addressing the delegates of the National Association of Jewish Community Center Secretaries, at the opening session of the ninth annual conference at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, last night, emphasized the importance of the Jewish community center as one of the most effective instruments for furthering the unification of American Jewry. Rabbi Fineshriber said that he had found a remarkable growth in tolerance and Jewish consciousness among the various elements of Jewish communities of the country.

Congressman Isaac Bacharach and Joseph M. Weidberg of Atlantic City welcomed the delegates.

The President of the Association, Tobias Roth, of Rochester, outlined the growth of the Jewish Center movement since the Jewish Welfare Board has sponsored a national policy, promoting better facilities. A trained personnel and effective program.

The association represents more than three hundred organizations affiliated with the Jewish Welfare Board.

A dinner was tendered Alexander Brin, editor of the Boston “Jewish Advocate”, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of his editorship of the paper and the 25th anniversary of its founding.

Among the contributions announced by Judge Francis X. Mancuso, Chairman of the Campaign Committee in the $2,000,000 drive to rebuild the Italian Hospital, was one of $3,000 from Col. Herbert H. Lehman.

Jewish dietary laws will be the subject of essays submitted in the annual essay contest planned by the Religious Observance Committee of the Young People’s League of the United Synagogue. The judges are Dr. Elias L. Solomon. Honorary President of the synagogue; David N. Mosessohn, editor of “The Jewish Tribune”, and Harry Schneiderman, Secretary of the American Jewish Committee. The essays must be sent to the League before June 15 and must not exceed 1,500 words.

A fund of $25,000 was given by Daniel Guggenheim to finance the airplane search of Newfoundland for the missing French aviators, Captains Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli. The expedition will be headed by F. Sydney Cotton, former Newfoundlander and air pilot, who believes that the men still are alive.

Mr. Guggenheim, whose interest in aviation was shown by his donations to New York University and to the Guggenheim Foundation for the Promotion of Aviation, said that America owes it to France and the cause of aviation to search to the very last limit for the men.

The graduation exercises of the School for Nursing of the Beth Israel Hospital were held last night at the Jewish Center in West 56th Street. New York.

Addresses were delivered by Dr. Louis J. Ladin. Chairman of the Committee on Nursing and Joseph H. Cohen. President of the Hospital. Twenty-eight graduates were awarded diplomas.
