Further extension of the numerus clausus against Jews was demanded today in the Hungarian Upper House by Count Cuno Klebelsberg. Minister of Education, a despatch received here states.
The Hungarian Minister of Education sought to justify this demand with the assertion that the improvement in the position of the Hungarian intellectual professionals necessitated further extension of the anti-Jewish discrimination. He also urged the application of a numerus clausus against Jews in the non-intellectual professions because unemployment has become generally felt.
The government, it is understood, intends to limit itself nevertheless to maintaining the numerus clausus in its present form without further extension, in view of the delicate nature of the question.
Count Klebelsberg’s statement has aroused keen dissatisfaction in Jewish circles, particularly in view of the promises which have been made on many occasions by Count Klebelsberg as well as by Premier Bethlen, and especially Klebelsberg’s undertaking before the League Council, that the numerus clausus would be gradually abolished.
