Jewish Population in Ukraine Numbers 1,750,000

In the course of a report on the minorities in the Ukraine, submitted to the Praesidium of the Minorities Council, it is stated that the Jewish population in the Ukraine, according to the latest figures, is 1,750,000 souls. There are sixtynine Jewish Soviets in the Ukraine. Educationally the Jews occupy first place, with only 349 illiterates to every thousand of the Jewish population.

One hundred and twenty-eight thousand desiatin of land have been allocated so far for Jewish land settlement in the Ukraine. The land is worked by over 8,000 Jewish agricultural societies. These have received States aid to the amount of two and one-half million roubles and a further sum of four and one half million roubles has been provided by the Jewish Colonization Society (Ozet). Two hundred and forty of the Jewish farms are model collectives. Seventy-five percent of the remainder are worked without hired labor.

Aaron Sapiro denied the report circulated to the effect that he received payment of $140,000 from Henry Ford. He stated that he did receive an ample check from Mr. Ford to cover part of the cost and the attomey’s fees of his suit.
