Jewish Teachers Summer Institute Ends Its Course

The Summer Institute for Jewish Teachers. the first of its kind, closed its third annual session following a seven weeks course here. While the courses were given primarily for the teachers of the Associated Talmud Torahs. a constitnency of the Philadelphia Federation of Jewish Charities, invitations were also sent to the teachers of the Hebrew Sunday School Society, private rehgious schools, in and around Philadelphia and to the advanced students of Greta College. Sessions were conducted regularly each week day from 2 to 6 o’clock.

Of the 67 people who enrolled in the courses this summer. 43 were engaged in teaching. Twenty seven of the registrants were young women.

The courses offered included Hebrew Grammar and Composition, Biblical Post-Biblical and Modern Hebrew literature and the Study of the Prayer Book. A course in music for Jewish schools was also given.

Jewish history and a course devoted to the pedagogic aspects of Jewish education, were also given. The lecturers at the Institute included Dr. David Bethlachmy, Principal of the South Philadelphia Hebrew School: S. L. Blank. Instructor. North Eastern Talmud Torabt Meyer Cohen. Principal of the Agudath Achim Hebrew School; Abraham Handelman. Head Teacher Hebrew High School; Dr. Louis L. Kaplan Director. Extension Activities: Josaph Levitsky. Principal of the North Eastern Talmud Torah. Instructor in Hebrew. Grata College and Ben Roser Director of the Associated Talmud Torahs. In addition the following special lecturers participated: Lou’s Nushaum. Assistant Sunerintendent Public Schools: Dr. Philip Bover. Director Deparment of Educational Research of Philadelphia Public Schools and Samuel Berman Principal of the William S. Pierce Public School.
