NISSIM BEHAR HONORED ON EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAY

Nissim Behar, prominent Jewish communal worker, active in many Jewish and humanitarian causes, was honored on the occasion of his eightieth birthday at a dinner given at the Broadway Central Hotel by a testimonial committee.

Several hundred leading New York Jews were present at the banquet where tributes were paid to the venerable leader who was the founder of the Alliance Israelite Universelle schools in the Orient.

Mr. Behar, a native of Jerusalem who achieved prominence in the humanitarian work of the Alliance in the Near East, arrived in the United States in 1901. He became active in many organizations, forming the Liberal Immigration League and taking an active part in the discussion of immigration questions. He was the originator of the idea of a Federation of Jewish Organizations and the Jewish Big Brother Association.

Harold Debrest, chairman of the testimonial committee, acted as toast-master. The speakers who paid tribute to Nissim Behar included Rabbi Bernard Dracham, Rev. Z. H. Masliansky, David L. Podell, former governor William Sulzer and others.
