The House Immigration Committee will grant hearings for one day only on the proposed amendments to the immigration law providing for uniting separated families. Hearings on the amendments will be held next Tuesday.
Shortly following the hearings, it is understood a sub-committee, dealing with this subject and headed by Chairman Johnson, will make its report to the main committee.
On next Thursday the Committee will meet in executive session to consider the national origins plan. At today’s meeting it was decided to postpone action on the bill for refundng the visa fees paid by aliens to American consuls, although the aliens were refused admittance because the visas had been issued by the consuls, unaware that the quotas had already been exhausted. The so-called immigrant refugees are considered chiefly entitled to these refunds.
Plans are being prepared for the arection of a new synagogue for the Agudas Achim Ansha Sphard Congregation, Baltimore, Md. Bids for the edifice will be asked as soon as the plans are completed, with the intention of beginning construction immediately. Jacob Mizen is president of the congregation.
The congregation, which has been worshiping in a remodeled dwelling for a number of years, will build a new synagogue on its present site. The edifice will be limestone and brick structure, having a seating capacity of from 1,000 to 1,200, and costing approximately $200,000, it was said.
