A mild rebuke to Rabbi Stephen S. Wise for his stand in the present Zionist controversy was administered by United States Senator William H. King at the opening session of the twenty-third annual convention of the Independent Order Brith Sholom here. The Senator deplored the action of Rabbi Wise in resigning from the Zionist Executive committee and pleaded with the Jews of America to “heal their differences.”

After expressing the hope that the number of Jews in Palestine will increase rapidly the Senator pointed to the efforts of the United States Government in building up the western part of this country. “Look at our own West,” the Senator declared by way of illustration,” forty millions of dollars were wasted and project after project was scrapped before any headway was made. Palestine is yours. Unite in its behalf.

“The Senator also told of a number of invitations to address Zionist meetings which he refused because he did not want to take sides in the controversy.

Four hundred delegates representing lodges in 25 States and 101 cities are attending the convention. In his annual message, Sol C. Kraus of Philadelphia, Grand Master of the Order, urged the members to intensify their interest in Jewish affairs. Judges Joseph L. Kun, Leopold C. Glass and William M. Lewis of Philadelphia addressed the session. The convention will continue until Tuesday evening.
