A group of Jerusalem craftsmen who are engaged in the production of souvenirs have submitted a memorandum to the High Commissioner in which the Government is urged to take measures to prohibit the importation of “Palestine souvenirs” manufactured abroad.
“Many merchants who deal in articles called ‘souvenirs’ purchase these things in Europe, especially in Germany, and sell them as if they were goods made in Palestine,” the memorandum states. “Moreover, the things they get from Germany and other countries in Europe are made in Oriental style, and even with emblems of the Holy Land, particularly of Jerusalem. In this way the buyer, the tourist who buys these objects as a souvenir of his visit to the Holy Land, and many with the purpose of patronizing Palestine artists and artisans, are unconsciously deceived. The artists and artisans live in great hardship by reason of being unemployed.
“Our trade is exposed to the danger of closing down through foreign unfair competition.
“We solicit Your Excellency to prohibit the importation of goods, of the above mentioned kind, to this country, unless each article bears an inscriptino, in big type, of the land of origin. We understand that such rules exist also in the United States and in Italy.”
HEBREW PROTECTIVE ASS’N. HOLDS FIRST CONVENTION
Resolutions indorsing the five-day week and expressing gratitude to Attorney General Albert Ottinger for instituting an investigation into cemeteries and a decision to establish a Jewish court of arbitration were adopted at the first annual convention of the Hebrew Religious Protective Association of Greater New York, Inc., held at the Broadway Central Hotel, Sunday.
Jacob Shapiro was re-elected president and the other officers were reelected. More than 500 delegates attended the convention. Mr. Shapiro announced that several hundred Orthodox Congregations had joined the association.
Daniel Stern, newspaper publisher, has purchased the Philadelphia Record from the Rodman Wanamaker state, it was announced.
Mr. Stern is editor and publisher of The Camden (N.J.) Evening Courier and The Morning Post.
