Lithuania Issues Ordinance on the Rabbinate

An ordinance regulating the functions of the Rabbinate in Lithuania was promulgated by the government.

One of the clauses of the ordinance provides that the election of a rabbi in a given community must be confirmed by the government. This provision has called forth the protest of the Jewish communities in the country.
