Subscriptions amounting to £15,590 were made toward the Balfour Forest fund, at a dinner held in the Guild Hall here. The Lord Mayor of London was among the 700 distinguished guests, including Lord Birkenhead, Lord Melchet, the Marquis of Reading, Sir Herbert Samuel, James Rothschild, Col. George S. Symes and Major Shuckburg of the Colonial Office. Major Nathan presided at the gathering, the first Jewish gathering to be held in the Guildhall.
In a message received from Lord Balfour, who was prevented from attending because of illness, he declared he was profoundly touched by Anglo-Jewry’s action, not only as an evidence of goodwill toward him but as a token of loyal cooperation of Anglo-Jewry and the British people in the fulfillment of this great enterprise. Messages were received from David Lloyd George and Lord Plumer, High Commissioner of Palestine.
The Marquis of Reading, Chief Rabbi, Dr. J. L. Hertz, the Lord Mayor and Henry Mond, son of Lord Melchett, addressed the gathering.
