Explanation of the presence in the public schools of Cleveland of the pamphlet, “The International Jew,” the anti-Semitic book by Henry Ford which he was to have withdrawn after his retraction, was demanded by Alfred A. Benesch, member of the Board of Education. The demand was presented at a meeting of the Board last week.
The pamphlet was among 2,500 others dealing with prohibition, open shop, child labor, public utilities, world peace, manufacture, banking, commerce and food production listed in a special report from Superintendent of Schools R. G. Jones to the Board of Education.
Mr. Benesch said he was particularly anxious to ascertain the manner in which other material dealing with what he termed “controversial questions” found its way into the school system.
Board members are studying the report. The report was submitted by Assistant Superintendent of Schools Charles H. Lake, in the absence on vacation of Supt. Jones.
OTTINGER ASSURED HE WILL BE REPUBLICAN NOMINEE
Albert C. Ottinger. New York State Attorney General, who returned from California was assured by Republican leaders that on the basis of the present situation he would be nominated gubernatorial candidate at the party convention in Syracuse by acclamation.
The engagement of E. R. A. Seligman, MeVickar professor of economics at Columbia to make a study of the economics underlying the farm problem for the National Democratic Committee was announced by John J. Raskob, the national chairman of the Committee.
The funeral of Israel Ellis. New York attorney who had been acive in Jewish organizations and civie life of New York City was held on Monday. Mr. Ellis, who was a member of the New York bar for forty years died Sunday at his home in Brooklyn at the age of sixty-one
Mr. Ellis was one of the founders of the Hebrew Kindergarten and Day Nursery, New York, an organizer of the Grand Street Boys, and the East Side Young Men’s Republlean Club, of which he was president for many years. He helped organize Jewish schools in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The new synagogue of Shaarel Zcdeck Congregation, which is being constructed in Clinton, Mass., will be dedicated Sunday Aug. 26 according to Morris Long, president of the congregation. A banquet will be held at which the principal speaker will be U. S. Senator David I. Walsh.
A synagogue is to be erected in Brookline, Mass, for the Templo Ohhabar Thalom.
