Delegations of leading Jewish organizations and in situtions-in the Republic of Austria called on President Hainisch yesterday to congratulate him on the occasion of his seventieth birthday.

Notwithstanding his affiliation with the Deutschnazionale party, President Hainisch is held in high respect and affection by Austrian Jews, having acted on many occasions as a friend of the cause of Jewish emancipation and of liberal thought. The President is said to be well versed on complicated Jewish questions and maintains close social contact with leading Jewish families in Vienna.

Recently President Hainisch was quoted as having said jocularly that “the anti-Semites have enlisted me into the Jewish family”because Mrs. Hainisch is of Jewish origin. “I am a liberty-loving democrat,” he then observed.
