M. Merelin, press director of the Soviet Embassy in Paris, modified the previous denial given out by the Embassy of the report that recruits for the Red army had attempted an anti-Jewish riot in Mohilev.
The Embassy’s statement declared that the Jewish Telegraphic Agency report, carried simultaneously by other news agencies, was correct, but that the report of the “Comsomolskaya’ Pravda,” Communist youth organ, had been exaggerated in order to discourage similar excesses in the future.
