A campaign for $100,000 has been launched for the purpose of establishing an agricultural colony in Palestine to be known as “Joseph Barondess Colony,” according to an announcement issued yesterday by David Surdut, chairman of the Barondess Memorial Fund Committee, of which Nathan Straus is Honorary Chairman and Rev. Z. H. Masliansky Honorary Vice-Chairman.
It was decided by the friends of the late Barondess to perpetuate Mr. Barondess’ memory thorugh a Palestinian colony because of the many decades during which Mr. Barondess was associated with the Zionist movement for the rebuilding of Palestine, according to Mr. Surdut. The Barondess Colony will be turned over to the Jewish National Fund.
Col. Herbert H. Lehman, Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor, has contributed $1,000 toward the fund. Other $1,000 gifts were made by Morris Eisenman and David Surdut. In the letter accompanying his contribution Mr. Lehman referred to the leadership of Mr. Barondess and his services to the Jewish people, saying, “I am sincerely pleased to be able to do this, both because of my interest in Palestine and because of the very high regard in which I always held Mr. Joseph Barondess. We worked together closely and in perfect harmony in many movements and I formed for him both a high admiration and a deep affection.”
