A renewed interest in Jewish studies is being noted in the Jewish community in Montreal, Recently Temple Emanu-El of this city opened a College of Jewish Studies, in which is offered a systematic study of Jewish history, religion, the Bible, Jewish literature and also Hebrew, and which also offers training for competent teachers and leaders for the Jewish religious schools, educational centres and communal activities of Montreal and vicinity.
The Shaar Hashomayim Synagogue, the largest orthodox synagogue in Canada, has added an extension course in its Institute of Jewish Studies, which was established in 1927, and which aims to provide opportunities for Jewish study higher than that offered in the regular religious school curriculum, as well as for those who desire professional training to teach in Jewsih religious schools. There are also Hebrew classes for beginners and advanced pupils, offered as an introduction to modern Hebrew literature. The courses at the Institute of Jewish Studies are for four years.
The faculty at the Temple Emanu-El College of Jewish Studies includes: Rabbi Harry J. Stern, of the Temple Emanu-El; Rabbi Julius Berger, of the Shaare Zion Synagogue and lecturer in the Oriental Department of McGill University; Rabbi J. L. Zlotnik, executive director of the Zionist Organization of Canada; Prof. Brodie Brockwell, head of the Semitic Department of McGill University; Mr. Nathan Gordon, K. C.; Mr. J. Bension. Dr. Lyon Bercovitch is the registrar. The faculty at the Shaar Hashomayim Institute of Jewish Studies includes: Dr. H. Abramowitz, Rabbi, Congregation Shaar Hashomayim; Mr. David Bloomstone; Mr. Harvey Golden, former instructor in history at Harvard University; Mr. I. M. Konowitz; Miss Anna Machlowitz; and Mr. Lazarus Phillips.
