–Jewish residents of Easton read with great interest the account in the “Jewish Daily Bulletin,” on November 20, of the fast and prayer in Prague for the election of Herbert Hoover as president, after the Chassidic Rabbi received a request of one of his followers, Henry Shoenberg, for such a prayer, and $150 for charitable purposes. Mr. Shoenberg is from this city and not Boston, Mass., as was erroneously stated in the dispatch from Prague.
Mr. Shoenberg, who is a well known real estate man here, was an active Hoover supporter and believed that he could best help Mr. Hoover with prayer. He visited many rabbis and after making donations to their congregations, asked that they pray for the election of Hoover. He visited Rabbis in Seranton, Wilkes Barre, Easton and other cities. He also sent three cablegrams together with contributions, to Rabbis in Europe, with a request that they pray for Hoover’s election. When he received word from the rabbis that such prayers are being said, he wired Mr. Hoover congratulations in advance of the election, feeling confident that the prayers will assure the election of the Republican nominee.
Mr. Schoenberg has received a letter of thanks from Mr. Hoover for the aid he rendered him during the campaign. He also visited Mr. Akerson, Mr. Hoover’s secretry in Washington, and told him what he had done in the campaign.
Mr. Shoenberg, who has been in this country about 30 years and has handled many large real estate transactions, has always believed in prayer. When it appeared as though he was to suffer a reverse, he always sent a cablegram to his rabbi, known as the Rebbe of Zydaczow, asking the latter to pray for him. Mr. Shoenberg stated today that the prayers seldom failed to help. He has also been contributing to the support of the rabbi.
