One thousand women are expected to attend the luncheon and pageant which is being given by the New York Chapter of Hadassah at noon, January 23rd, in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Astor. Each of the women will have donated or secured a minimum of $50 as admission to the function. The affair is being given under the auspices of the New York Chapter of Hadassah as its share of the quota for the United Palestine Appeal for Greater New York. Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Straus who will be present, are to be presented with a silver-encased scroll in recognition of their services for the upbuilding of Palestine. This scroll will contain a list of various contributions that Mr. and Mrs. Straus have made for the rebuilding of Palestine. The presentation will be made by Mrs. Robert Szold, National President of Hadassah. Mr. Straus’s eighty-first birthday occurs on January 21, and the luncheon is being given in his honor.
A pageant, representing the development of Hadassah and the part it has played in the rebuilding of the Jewish Homeland, will be a feature of the program. The pageant was written by Mrs. Jacob Schwarz.
A check for $50,000 which the New York Chapter of Hadassah expects to raise, will be presented at the luncheon to Judge William M. Lewis of Philadelphia, National Chairman of the United Palestine Appeal, who will also be the principal speaker.
The patronesses of the luncheon include Mrs. Samuel Hoffman, Mrs. Rebekah Kohut, Mrs. Samuel Rosenblom, Mrs. Jacob Schiff and Mrs. Max Wiesen.
The luncheon committee which is headed by Mrs. Jacob Schwarz includes representatives from various sections of the Bronx and Manhattan, among them, Mrs. E. Axel, for the Concourse; Mrs. E. Brookman, for the East Bonx; Mrs. M. Greenstein, for Riverside; Mrs. R. Goldstein, for University Heights; Mrs. R. Liebowitz, for Washington Heights; Mrs. L. Steinberg, for the West Side: Mrs. M. Radin, for Yorkville, and Mrs. E. Westin, Mrs. N. Edson, Mrs. M. Schwartz and Mrs. S. Slavin.
