Sir Hugo Hirst, director of the General Electric Company, Ltd. of Great Britain, who is now on a visit to Melbourne from England, receiving a delegation of the Zionist Organization of Melbourne declared that England is giving the Jews a big chance in Palestine and “it depends upon the Jews how soon they will make good.”
Sir Hugo expressed satisfaction in the progress of the Ruttenberg electrification work in Palestine, with which he himself is connected.
He praised the wok of the Hebrew University and the Technicum of Haifa, as educating a suitable class of Palestine citizens. He predicted a brighter economic future for the country with the construction of the Haifa harbor, when Haifa will become the most important commercial center in the Near East. The Mosul pipe lines going through Haifa and the geographic position of the country will make Palestine within one generation the eastern gateway and the principal center of communication with India through Iraq.
