A mass meeting was held here this afternoon at the First Roumanian Congregation under the auspices of the United Roumanian Jews of America, Chicago branch, to celebrate the change that has taken place in the political life of Roumania-Among the speakers were Judge Harry Fisher and George Boncescu, Financial Counsellor of the Roumanian Legation in Washington.
In his address M. Boncescu stated: “Your thoughtful idea of holding a special-public meeting as a manifestation of friendship and sympathy for Mr. Juliu Maniu and his Government will, I am sure, produce a deep impression in official and private circles in Roumania, and will go a long way towards making the friendship between America and Roumania an everlasting structure.
“When I look back about a year or so and recollect the unfavorable light in which Roumania was regarded in this country as a result of the unfortunate occurences in Transylvania, it affords me great satisfaction to see that in this short space of time the situation has altered to such an extent that you have thought it advisable to gather here for the purpose of giving praise where praise is due.”
The United Roumanian Jews of America in New York tendered a dinner to Jacob Rosenthal, newly appointed Technical Attache to the Roumanian Legation at Washington at the Hotel McAlpin last night.
Prince M. R. Sturza and Andre Popovici of the Roumanian Legation and Dr. T. Tileston Wells, Consul General of Roumania in New York, were present. Herman Speier acted as toastmaster.
The Chicago Loop Orthodox synagogue, the first synagogue in the heart of Chicago’s business section, was opened in the Tacoma Building. The project is supported by business men who desire to attend daily services near their places of business.
