Establishment of a central board of control for the United Synagogue of America was urged by Louis J. Moss, chairman of the Brooklyn division of the United Synagogue’s campaign for $500,000 in addressing the third annual convention of the New York State Branch of the United Synagogue., held at Temple Ansche Chesed, New York City. Mr. Moss advocated the central board as a means of eliminating the “mushroom congregations” which function only during the High Holiday season.
A resolution was adopted calling upon the incoming officers to make a statewide survey of these conditions, especially regarding “mushroom congregations,” with a view to possible legislation.
The following officers for the ensuing year were elected: Hyman J. Reit, president; Representative Sol Bloom, of New York; Bernard Breitbart of Mount Vernon; Dr. Norman Salit, Far Rockaway; Louis J. Moss, Henry Seinfel, Sol Mutterperl, Alfred Hart, Rochester; M. S. Lieberman, Utica; Isaac Markson, Syracuse, and Charles Polakoff, of Buffalo, vice-presidents. Joseph Durst, of Mount Vernon, treasurer, and Rabbi Samuel M. Cohen, secretary.
