Secretary Stimson commented upon the news that British troops had arrived at the scene of disturbance and that British war vessels were expected, “It is gratifying to be assured that the Union Jack will protect Americans in the absence of vessels flying the Stars and Stripes, nevertheless, the dispatch of an American warship to Jaffa, prepared to send bluejackets and marines to Jerusalem in case of need, might have a beneficial moral effect. No part of the world is so remote that the protecting arm of the United States cannot reach out to its own people if ships are available for the purpose.”
