The New York Evening World published an editorial on Thursday, August 29, regretting the publication of Vincent Sheean’s Arab-inspired and unfair despatch from Jerusalem alleging that the Zionist Revisionists, whom he termed “Zionist Fascisti” provoked the outbreaks. The editorial says:
“Commenting on the shameful riots in Palestine, The Evening World recently referred to the statement of the correspondent of a North American Newspaper Alliance resident in Palestine that the immediate cause of the rioting was a provocative attitude of “the Zionist Fascisti,” albeit we placed the real responsibility on the failure of the British Government to make good on the Balfour pledge. It has been called to our attention that there is no Fascisti organization among the Zionists, and that the correspondent had created a false impression. We, therefore, gave space to the extensive statement in refutation of the correspondent’s claim by Elias Ginsberg.
“The North American Newspaper Alliance is not controlled by this paper. We regret that an injustice was done the Zionists through the error of the correspondent, and we are glad that the troubles in Palestine cannot be charged to provocation methods employed by such a militant and aggressive organization as the Fascisti. The whole tone and temper of the comments of The Evening World reduces to an absurdity the suggestion of a few correspondents that we are moved by racial or religious prejudices.”
