At the urgent instance of the government, a congress of rabbis will take place in November. This will be the first convention of rabbis since their conference in May, 1926.
The conference at that time dealt with the question of creating a Jewish Consistory, but no agreement could be reached between the Mizrachi and the Agudath Israel, and the question has remained open up to the present. The government repeatedly urged the rabbis to reach a decision, without results so far.
The government is now exercising pressure by threatening that unless a Consistory is created and definite regulations worked out, it will grant no salaries to the rabbis nor will they be exempt from service in the army.
A subsidy has been granted by the government in order to facilitate the holding of the congress. The government also promised that if the convention this time reaches definite results, it will grant a contribution towards the Beth Hamidrash in Remigola, which was destroyed by fire, as well as certain privileges to the Slobodka Yeshiva.
The editor of the “Yiddishe Stimme” in Kovno has been sentenced to one month’s imprisonment. The charge against him was the alleged spreading of false rumors regarding military affairs.
