Tribute to Alfred M. Cohen, banker, philanthropist and long prominent with endeavors for the promotion of Jewish education, was paid by the Board of Governors of the Hebrew Union College, of which he is a member, at a dinner yesterday in honor of his seventieth birthday. Mr. Cohen was completely surprised at the testimonial, as he had believed it was to be a regular business meeting of the Board.
Ludwig Vogelstein of New York, chairman of the Executive Board of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, in praising Mr. Cohen, pointed to his twenty-eight years of service as a member of the board and for twelve years as its chairman in which he had seen and collaborated in the college’s greatest progress.
In his address, Mr. Vogelstein declared that the situation in the world was one challenging the spiritual forces of American Jewry. Instead of feeling discouraged, he believed Jews everywhere should see the need for more energetic activity on behalf of their faith, to strengthen and to make it a working force in America and all other great nations.
