Dr. Herman M. Adler, state criminologist since 1917, tendered his resignation to Governor Louis L. Emmerson yesterday because of illness in his family. It was announced at the same time at the state capital, Springfield, that Dr. Adler had accepted a professorship of psychiatry at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Adler also will be consultant of the California state department of institutions.
Regret at the loss of Dr. Adler was expressed by both Gov. Emmerson and Rodney Brandon, director of the state department of public welfare. Dr. Adler has been in the service of the state since July 1, 1927, when the office, the first of its character in the country, was created under the administration of Governor Frank O. Lowden. From its inception, Dr. Adler was regarded as the leading scientist employed in this work.
