M. Robinson, the representative in Bira-Bidjan of the Ozet, the society for settling the Jews on the land, who was recalled to Moscow, reports today about the difficulties there. He admits that only 2,500 hectares of land are being tilled and that there are but 400 families remaining in, 230 houses.
Robinson’s report confirms the recent assertions of demoralization in Tichonkoye by Victor Fink, a journalist who visited Bira Bidjan and reported on the demoralization among the Jewish settlers in Tichonkoye. Robinson says, however, that Tichonkoye should not be taken as an index for all of Bira Bidjan which he believes has a good future if only modern technique is applied. He avoided the question of the two and a half million roubles that had been spent.
