The new South African quota law, which after May 1 will not admit more than 50 immigrants a year from each of the East European countries which formerly contributed the bulk of the immigration to South Africa, is blamed for the attempted suicide of Rosa Sadstein, a Jewish orphan from Grodno who took poison here today.
She arrived in Warsaw today to take passage on the last boat leaving for South Africa that would bring her there before the new quota law went into effect. When she applied for a ticket at the steamship company’s office she was informed that the boat was booked to capacity. Local friends of the comely orphan say that she was to join her fiance who had preceded her to South Africa.
Since the new restrictive law was passed the steamship companies here that operate boats to South Africa have been swamped with applicants seeking to reach South Africa before the law went into effect. Similar reports come from Lithuania and Latvia.
