Senator Robert Wagner of New York is expected to assume the leadership of the fight in the Senate on the Blease voluntary alien registration bill. He indicated today that he was in touch with national Jewish and other organizations opposed to the bill. Senator Wagner said that he was interviewing a number of Senators with a view to organizing the opposition in preparation for a strong fight on the proposed measure when it comes up for consideration and a vote on the floor of the Senate.

Both Senator Wagner and Senator Copeland have taken steps to prevent a repetition of the recent surprise vote when Senator Copeland frustrated Senator Blease’s effort to obtain the bill’s adoption without debate. It is known that the Progressive bloc of Senators, including Senators La Follette, Morris, Nye, Wheeler and Johnson, have expressed themselves as bitterly opposed to compulsory alien registration and Senator Wagner is hopeful that he will be able to demonstrate to them the dangerous character of Blease’s voluntary registration bill.

Senator Wagner is furnishing them with material supplied by the American Jewish Committee.
