Opposition to the use of the word “Judea” by a Brooklyn political club on the part of the Brooklyn Jewish Ministers Association has caused a rift between the association of Brooklyn rabbis and the Judea Democratic Club, of which Maurice E. Biederman is the leader.
At a meeting last week of the Ministers’ Association, of which Rabbi Israel H. Levinthal of the Brooklyn Jewish Center, is president, and at which 20 rabbis were present, the use of the world “Judea” by the club was condemned on the ground that political clubs should not be organized along religious or racial lines.
In answer to this resolution of the rabbis, Mr. Biederman declared that the “Judea Democratic Club has nothing to do with religion and does not propose to bring religion into politics. “We are just a racial group banded together to do our share to promote good government and community welfare, and as such have a perfect right to our name,” said Mr. Biederman.
