Whether king Carol’s accession to the Roumanian throne will improve the Jewish position in the country is hard to foresee, the Vienna “Neue Freie Presse” points out, because of rumors that the King is anti-Semitically inclined. On the other hand the Vienna press indicates that the government’s authority is undoubtedly increased and it will be able to suppress disturbances, including those directed against the Jewish population.
Thus far, however, the anti-Semitic agitation shows no signs of diminishing, the paper says in publishing alarming reports from Southern Bukowina and other districts where frightened Jews are fleeing their villages. In Baltzi the Cuzists are continuing their attacks, breaking into Jewish houses and assaulting Jews on the streets.
The opinion here is that it remains to be seen whether the coronation will ease the Jewish situation or whether new conflicts arising out of the coronation, which has already resulted in a split in the Liberal Party, will cause renewed anti-Jewish disturbances.
