The movement to introduce the study of the Hebrew language in the high schools gained impetus with the approval given the plan by Webster H. Pearce, superintendent of public instruction of the state of Michigan.
In a statement made yesterday to Charles Rubiner, Jewish assistant attorney general of the state of Michigan, Mr. Pearce said.
“In my opinion it would be a very wise and acceptable procedure for high schools to offer an elective course in the study of the Hebrew language should there be a demand for such a course by enough students to make a regularly organized class.
“I feel that such a course would be a valuable course from the standpoint of training and can ste no reason why most colleges and universities would not accept such credit in lieu of other selective credits for entrance. Such a course would have my approval.”
