Miss Anita Colombo, an Italian Jewess, has been appointed director of the world-famous Scala Opera House in Milan. Miss Colombo suceeds another Jew, the late Angelo Scandiani, who died recently.
Miss Colombo’s appointment to this important post has caused considerable surprise, in view of the fact that a woman rather than a man was named, but in view of her acknowledged qualifications has also given general satisfaction.
Miss Colombo is the daughter of a banker in whose house many musicians, notably Toscanini, used to visit. She was for a time Toscanini’s secretary, and accompanied him and Scandiani as one of the organizers on the various tours made by the Scala orchestra in the European capitals.
