Hundreds of Jewish women here and in other parts of Poland are extremely interested in yesterday’s ruling of the Polish supreme court that divorces granted in America are illegal in Poland if the marriages were contracted in Poland. In such cases a Polish divorce is also necessary.
The husbands of these Jewish women are now in America and the women are to a considerable extent dependent on the money sent them by their husbands. The decision of the Polish supreme court makes it impossible for the husbands in America to rid themselves of their wives in Poland by obtaining divorces in the United States. Most of these Jewish women are unable to join their husbands in the United States because of the immigration laws. The supreme court’s decision constitutes an important piece of protective legislation for these Jewish women.
