“The report of the Permanent Mandates Commission of the League of Nations on the Palestine situation is a sweeping vindication of the Jewish position with regard to the disturbances in Palestine last August,” declared Robert Szold, Chairman of the Administration of the Zionist Organization of America, in commenting on the report that was issued Monday at Geneva.
Declaring that the Mandates Commission has laid it down as a definite policy that the Palestine Mandate carries with it positive obligations for the establishment of the Jewish National Home, Mr. Szold, speaking on behalf of the Zionist Organization of America, finds it “regrettable that the British government should take offense at the frank and courageous statement of the Mandates Commission.” Reviewing the maladministration of Great Britain in Palestine during the past year, the Zionist statement asserts, however, “We have not lost faith in the British people.”
Mr. Szold, on behalf of the Z. O. A., also sent a cable to Sir Eric Drummond, secretary general of the League of Nations, in which the Mandates Commission’s report is termed “a great state paper” which constitutes a message of hope and encouragement to the Jews of America.
The cablegram expresses satisfaction with the contents of the report and gives praise to the League for a re-assertion of its authority over the administration of mandated territories. Declaring that the action of the Mandates Commission in dealing with the conduct of Great Britain in Palestine will “hearten all the smaller peoples whose rights depend upon the enforcement of a reign of law and justice,” the cablegram expresses the belief that the report will “simplify the Palestine problem.”
