Stressing the importance of Hadassah women in Canada making every effort to increase the income of the Jewish National Fund by placing boxes in every home in Canada, Mrs. A. J. Freiman, president of the Dominion Hadassah, stated at the sixth Hadassah convention here that had more men and women settled in Palestine last year, the riots would never have taken place. “Our weakness lay in our numbers, and unless we endeavor to acquire a greater area of land this must always be so,” stated Mrs. Freiman.
Among non-Jews who addressed the convention were Mayor F. H. Plant of Ottawa, who welcomed the delegates to the city and praised the activities of Mrs. Freiman on behalf of Gentiles as well as Jews; Mrs. J. A. Wilson, president of the National Council of Women in Canada; and Henry M. Tory, president of the League of Nations and National Research Council of Canada. Rabbi Nathan Kollin of Ottawa in a speech denounced the anti-Semitic dailies that during the recent elections had claimed that the Jews were combining into an international league against the welfare of Canada.
Officers of Canadian Hadassah who were elected for the ensuing term are: Mrs. A. J. Freiman, president; Mesdames L. Fitch, S. Kahn, vice-presidents, Eastern Division; Mesdames D. Dunkelman, A. Selick, vice-presidents, Central Division; Mesdames M. Rady and A. H. Goldberg, vice-presidents, Western Division; Mrs. M. Garfinkle, honorary secretary; and Mrs. L. Miller, honorary treasurer.
