Major-General Sir Louis Bols, chief of staff of Field-Marshall Allenby, conqueror of Palestine and the man who captured Jerusalem, is dead at a nursing home in Bath. He was 63 years old. Sir Louis was in command of the military government in Palestine from a period shortly after its conquest by the British until the civil administration under Sir Herbert Samuel took control in 1920.
Entering the army in 1887, he became an adjutant in 1899. From 1891 to 1892 he served in Burma, being decorated by the King for his services. He was a member of the Chitral Relief force and from 1899 to 1902 saw service in South Africa. During the World War he fought on the Flanders, Palestinian and Syrian fronts. He was promoted to a major-general and later decorated by the French, Japanese, Russian and British governments.
