Bucharest (Sep. 26)
The situation in Northern Bessarabia, especially in Balti and Soroca, is very disquieting because the sufferings of the population are being exploited for anti-Semitic agitation, declared Serge Dimitru, Liberal leader and former prefect of Balti in the course of an interview that he gave to the Nasha Reci, the organ of the Russian minority in Bessarabia but published in Bucharest. There is more behind the present unrest than appears on the surface, M. Dimitru said, adding that the government measures are not sufficient.
On the other hand the Dimineatza, leading Bucharest daily, calls the government’s attention to the danger of social difficulties in the Southern part of Roumania. The paper urges the government to take measures to assist the peasants out of their troubles by such means as postponement of taxes and interest payments on loans. The Dimineatza also suggests that government officials and members of parliament as well as the press begin a counter-propaganda to offset that among the peasants. Unless drastic steps are taken at once, the paper warns, it may soon be too late.
