Need to Stimulate Student Interest in Judaism Stressed at Hartford Conference

The importance of providing Jewish programs and Jewish associations for the seven hundred or more Jewish students attending the colleges and universities in the state of Connecticut was emphasized at the first regional conference held last Sunday under the auspices of the National Committee of One Thousand, United Synagogue of America. More than 100 delegates, representing virtually every Jewish community in the state, attended the conference and wholeheartedly endorsed the efforts now being made by this National Committee to stimulate interest in traditional Judaism throughout the country and particularly to make provision for the needs of the Jewish student youth in the cultural institutions throughout the land.

The conference was opened by Rabbi Morris Silverman of Hartford, president of the Conncticut state branch of the United Synagogue. A. B. Cohen, national chairman of the Committee of One Thousand, State Senator Herman P. Koppelman, national secretary; Mrs. David Friedlander, national director; and Rabbi Jesse Schwartz of New Britain, chairman of the Connecticut state branch of the United Synagogue, were among the speakers. The conference elected the following state officers: chairman, Hon. David L. Nair; secretary, David A. Lippman; treasurer, Abner Schwartz. Another state conference will take place on Oct. 26th at Congregation Emanu-El in Hartford.
