The court of assizes today annulled the death sentences passed last June on three Jews charged with Communist activities. The case was carried to the court of appeals in Warsaw which threw out the decision of the Lemberg court and ordered the latter to give the three Jews a new trial.
As a result of the new trial the Jews were again found guilty but the death sentence was quashed and replaced by milder punshiment for two of the accused, while the third, Naphtali Propper, was let off with a warning. The other two, Samuel Jugend, 22, a minor government official, was sentenced to a year in prison, and Israel Hirsch, 23, was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
