Because of the recent slump in the diamond industry, unemployment is very serious among the diamond cutters of the Netherlands, according to a report received by the Department of Labor here. Most of the diamond cutters are Jews. Of the 5,728 usually employed in Amsterdam there are only 1,032 working at present, according to the report. The lower wages paid to diamond workers in Belgium is cited as one of the chief causes for the present situation.
