Detroit Jewish Bakeries Closed As Consumers Strike for Price Reduction

Detroit Jewish bakeries have been forced to close as a result of a bread strike initiated by consumers in demands for reductions in prices.

Action was taken at a conference of 28 of the largest Jewish organizations and landsmanschaften, and of the workers organizations in the city, including the Arbeiter Ring branches. Jericho Temple was packed to the doors with an audience determined that their demands be honored by the Jewish bakers.

The demands of the striking consumers are for a reduction in price of bread of three cents on the pound, with a proportionate cut on “chalas” and cakes.
