Find Ancient Arch Under Synagogue Near Wailing Wall

Download PDF for this date

An ancient arch under a synagogue close to the Wailing Wall was uncovered today on King David Street near the gate chain leading to the Temple area. King David Street is supported by underground arches which in ancient times spanned the Tyropean valley. The newly-found arch resembles the famous Sir Charles Wilson arch below which is the Burak pool named after Mohammed’s legendary horse.

The find was made during repairs on an old drain. Simultaneously a pool about 16 metres below the street level was found. The government department of antiquities has ordered work on the drain suspended pending an investigation of the arch.
