At a meeting of 400 Jewish people in Dorscht Hall, protesting that the price of kosher meat in New Haven is too high and declaring that they will boycott the New Haven kosher butchers and bring in butchers from out of town, a committee, headed by Frank Dipsiner, was selected to outline a program of action.
The committee intends to send out speakers among the different Jewish organizations and arouse them to a greater interest in the exorbitant prices for kosher meats. Samuel Daitch, secretary of the committee said, “the apathy of the Jewish people in regard to the prices charged for their meat has caused the formation of a trust of the 25 butchers of meats in New Haven.”
The local kosher meat, the committee claimed, is of such inferior quality that it is not fit for consumption. The Western or New York meat is at a price which is prohibitive, it was declared. Prices were quoted from meat markets not kosher which showed that kosher meat was almost twice as high as non-kosher meat. The committee will investigate prices in other cities and will present a comparison at the next meeting to be held soon.
